Congratulations to October’s jackpot winner of $41,672, Janette Castellan!
“Flabbergasted, I was simply flabbergasted”, exclaimed this month’s grand prize winner, Janette Castellan. “My biggest previous lottery win was a free ticket. I never win anything.”
Well, Janette’s fortunes have turned around with a windfall of $41,672. A loyal player for the past eight months, she had been happy just knowing her money was helping the hospital. Now she is thrilled to be a grand prize winner too.
As soon as she heard the advertisement for the 50/50 Hospital Lottery for Guelph General Hospital on Magic 106.1 Janette wanted to support it. “This is my local hospital. I want to show my appreciation for the care my family and I have received. I am so pleased that the proceeds from this month go towards the purchase of a new MRI. Both my husband, Andy, and I have had MRI scans here.”
After working in education until her retirement in 2012, Janette and Andy had been enjoying the freedom to do some more travelling. COVID-19 caused a halt to that but they are hopeful about travel plans for summer of 2022. “We will use some of this lottery money to fund our trip to a family reunion in Turin, Italy. My husband was born in Italy and his aunts, uncles and cousins are there. It will be the birthday of a very elderly aunt. The pandemic has made us realize how precious time with family is. We will be able to stay longer and see and do so much more now with these funds. We can’t wait!”
When asked whether she would continue to play Janette replied, “Of course. I already have my tickets bought for November.” That’s the spirit.

Proceeds from the November 50/50 lottery will be used towards the purchase of a new MRI scanner for Guelph General Hospital. A new MRI will improve image quality. Doctors will be able to see smaller details with greater clarity, leading to an earlier and more accurate diagnosis. It will also be up to two times faster! A scan that now takes 30 minutes could be completed in 15 to 20 minutes. GGH will be able to complete more patient scans per hour of operation. And the new scanner is capable of producing images for a broader range of injuries and illnesses.
