History of Giving

Guelph General Hospital – Rooted in community support.

In Guelph-Wellington donors have always been an essential part of our Hospital’s tradition of community support. In 1872, the citizens of Guelph and the surrounding area raised more than $3,000 to help fund our first hospital. Built in 1875, at the cost of $9,871, the two-story building had 12 beds and a farm on the property to supply patients with fresh eggs, milk and vegetables.

Much has changed since those days. Today we have medications, technologies and treatments that would have been beyond belief to people of that era. But what they would have recognized is what we’ve preserved – staff dedicated to quality, compassionate care; and donors who continue to play a pivotal role in helping us meet our community’s growing needs.

Since 1987, The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital has existed to raise and steward funds to help Guelph General Hospital provide the highest quality care and experience for patients and their families.

Patient care is better at Guelph General Hospital because of community support.
