GUELPH FAMILY MARTIAL ARTS — SMALL BUSINESS WITH A BIG HEART

Guelph Family Martial Arts (GFMA) is looking to expand. The dojo is seriously crowded with certificates, awards, and trophies—big trophies—some as tall as Sophie Skoufis, who works with her son, Nathan, in the thriving business. GFMA offers Guelphites a wide range of training in self-defence and fitness—from jujitsu to taekwondo to kickboxing. Sophie and Nathan are international champions in their art. But the family teaches much more than the basics.

In all classes, they focus on healthy living, self-esteem, self-discipline, coordination, personal safety, respect, courtesy, and other crucial values. One of the most significant principles that they instill in their students is the importance of giving back to the community.

Guelph General Hospital is one of many charitable organizations that GFMA supports. “Both my boys were born in the hospital, and it’s reassuring to know that it is there, whenever we need it,” says Sophie.” The Guelph community is lucky to have such a resource.”  Nathan adds, “Your life should mean more than just what you can get out of it. It should involve service to others, and we are fortunate to be able to give back.” Nathan says that GFMA is involved in over fifteen special events each year, from Ribfest to the Guelph Multicultural Festival and, at each event, they ask for donations to the causes they support. Nathan and Sophie believe that every little bit helps.

Guelph Family Martial Arts’ commitment to GGH, their strong community spirit and compelling ethical leadership provide a shining example to the more than 300 youngsters and citizens who attend their classes and special events. The Foundation and Hospital are truly grateful for their support.
