Marianne Walker

Today is our 100th Monday Motivator!

Our #MondayMotivation looks at what makes Guelph General Hospital what it is today.

Marianne Walker, Guelph General Hospital’s President and CEO, leads our amazing hospital by supporting staff and physicians to do what they do best.

Marianne sees her role as providing leadership to help achieve GGH’s vision, mission and values.

But what are those vision, mission and values? Guelph General Hospital has a vision of exceptional care, innovative partnerships and healthier communities. It strives to provide the highest quality of care and experience for patients and their families through teamwork, accountability, compassion and respect.

Teamwork

Part of what makes GGH such an incredible organization is the wonderful staff that work here. Marianne marvels at the sense of ownership GGH’s staff and physicians feel towards our hospital.

“This is their community hospital and they work hard to make it the best it can be,” she explains.

Marianne is constantly impressed by the dedication staff show to the hospital and the patients we serve. Many of the staff have been here for the majority of their careers and are consistently engaged in their work and with their team. When Marianne asks staff what they love about working at GGH, they often say that it is the great people they work with, the abundance of opportunities the hospital provides and the chance to make a difference in the lives of others.

Accountability

Marianne works towards creating an organization that all members of our community can be proud of. She works with our Board of Directors to understand what the community wants, and communicates that to the rest of our leadership team. The Board keeps the hospital accountable which is incredibly important to us.

Compassion

Early in her career, Marianne worked as a paediatric nurse. She brings the skills she learned from this role to her current job every day.

“When working in Paeds, you quickly learn that it is not just about the child you are caring for, but the family and what they want and need is just as important,” reflects Marianne.

Today, putting on her scrubs and connecting with patients and families to hear their feedback helps her understand what is really important to our community. By interacting with our patients and families, Marianne hopes to make a difference in that moment and beyond.

Respect

Guelph General Hospital is a very special place. Decisions are made through a collaborative approach and challenges are taken on and resolved through team work. This is strengthened by the strong sense of respect among team members. The best outcomes come from the decisions made by the group, not by one.

Marianne states, “It is an honour and a privilege to be working with other healthcare providers and making a difference.”

An organization is only as good as the people that make it, and our people are pretty incredible.
