Community members celebrated for raising $1.2 million by riding a bike
On Tuesday evening, dozens of community members gathered at Fixed Gear Brewing Canteen to celebrate raising over $1.2 million for Guelph General Hospital and numerous local charitable programs through the Tour de Guelph community cycling fundraiser that has been taking place annually in June for the past 11 years.
At the event, three individuals were honoured for their significant fundraising contributions: Ross McKinnell, Mike Diamond and Charlie Barnes who have raised $54,142, $58,093, and $103,986 respectively.
Charlie Barnes took to the stage to share his secrets to raising so much money, “ask everyone you know, no matter where they live, people will donate because they want to support you.” Charlie said he has about 300 people that he asks every year by sending each a personalized email that includes a link to his online donation page, “I always include a personal message such as a reference to a time we shared or the last time we saw each other.” Charlie also does a good job at thanking people who support him, so they keep supporting him year after year.

Julie Byczynski, CEO of The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital joined on stage to explain the impact of the funds raised. Interventional radiology, IV pumps, ultrasound machines, ventilators, CT scanner, a centralized cardiac monitor, blood pressure monitors, MRI scanner, OR equipment and colonoscopes were listed by Byczynski as the patient care equipment that Tour de Guelph proceeds has helped to fund over the years. “Not everyone knows this, but all patient care equipment at the hospital is funded by donations.”
Also in attendance to share thanks was Liz Fisk, Tour de Guelph (TdG) Co-chair, a Rotary Club of Guelph Trillium member. Liz spoke of the TdG volunteer contributions of Rotarians from both the Guelph South and Guelph Trillium clubs. “The health-related impacts on our local community of Rotary’s share of the proceeds from the event are many. They include support for maternal and child health, special programing and assistive devices for individuals with special needs, poverty initiatives, food for homeless youth and programs fighting food insecurity.”
Cosmo Career of Speed River Bicycle was announced as the 2025 Tour de Guelph Hall of Fame Inductee for his volunteerism for over a decade, including his efforts to help establish the first Tour de Guelph bike ride in 2014. Clarence Haverson, past Tour de Guelph Co-chair, Rotary Club of Trillium remarked, “Cosmo Carere’s dedication to Tour de Guelph has been instrumental in making the event the success it is today.”
Mayor Cam Guthrie and MP Lloyd Longfield, both of whom have participated in Tour de Guelph nearly every year, were also in attendance to help celebrate. Guthrie congratulated The Foundation of Guelph General Hospital and the Rotary Clubs of Guelph South and Guelph Trillium for heading into their 12th year of partnership.
