Congratulations to Julie, our Thanksgiving 50/50 Lottery Winner!
Summary
Julie's story reminds us that life has a unique way of rewarding those who give without expecting anything in return and we could not be happier for her. Julie expresses her heartfelt thanks to the Foundation and the dedicated GGH staff for this wonderful surprise. It's a surprise she was truly happy to receive.
Julie’s story is a testament to the power of giving, the strength of the human spirit, and the surprises life can offer. Julie is the embodiment of someone who plays not to win but to support a cause close to her heart, the GGH 50/50 lottery.
Julie’s journey with the lottery began at the very beginning, not with the anticipation of winning, but rather with the desire to transform healthcare through giving. She knew firsthand the invaluable role that Guelph General Hospital (GGH) played in the lives of many in her community, and she wanted to contribute.
For Julie, GGH is more than just a hospital. GGH is a place that has touched her life in many ways. In November 2000, her world was shaken when she collapsed at work. Little did she know that this moment of crisis would change her life. GGH’s fast and accurate diagnosis of a brain aneurysm set Julie on a path that led her to Hamilton General Hospital, where she underwent not one, but four brain surgeries. Julie is here today thanks, in no small part, to the exceptional care she received.
But that’s not the end of Julie’s connection to GGH. It’s also the place where she brought her two sons into the world, a role that the hospital has played in the most joyous moments of her life. As a mother of two boys, she has found herself in the emergency room on numerous occasions, including her oldest son’s diagnosis of myopericarditis. Persistent support and expertise of the GGH staff have been a constant source of reassurance.
Julie’s journey took another unexpected turn during the pandemic. She found herself in the Emergency Department (ED) once more, this time due to an extreme allergic reaction to CT contrast dye. At the time, quick response and expert care of the ED team ensured her safety during a challenging time for everyone.
In Julie’s words, “I had always joked that if I had money for every time a physician told me I was medically unique, I’d be a lucky gal”. Well, it turns out that Julie’s unique medical journey led her to an unexpected and joyful moment. When the Foundation contacted her, she couldn’t have predicted the news.
Imagine her shock when Julie was told she had won the GGH 50/50 lottery and would be taking home $31,590!

For someone who played for the love of giving and not the thrill of winning, this was an incredible and delightful surprise. With her two boys, Julie is now looking into a special trip for the three of them and we wish them all the best on a well-deserved adventure. Julie tells us any remaining funds will be thoughtfully invested in her Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP).
