Congratulations to our November 50/50 Hospital Lottery Winner!

“I am super happy to be the winner, but the point of playing was to support the hospital – mission accomplished,” enthused Christina DePass, our November winner of $25,000 in the 50/50 Hospital Lottery for Guelph General Hospital.

Christina works as a Lab Supervisor at Johnson & Johnson in Guelph and is a long-time 50/50 player. She started buying the minute the lottery began after seeing the ad in Guelph Today. “It was during the pandemic and I felt that I needed to find a way to support the hospital even though I have never been there. I am young and healthy. I am one of the lucky ones who hasn’t needed to be hospitalized, but felt that I needed to offer support.”

Christina has only told her parents about her $25,000 win so far, needing to see the cheque to really believe it. “This is one that I will deposit through my banking app. I want to keep this original.” Indeed, what a memento of a momentous occasion!

When asked what she was going to do with her winnings, Christina reflected that living through this COVID-19 pandemic has changed her perspective. “Before COVID, I would likely have said I would spend a bunch of it on a trip. I want to visit all the continents at least once, starting with Australia. But now, I want to focus on sharing it forward and giving back. I will share the money with my parents, sister and grandmother. I will also perform some random acts of kindness around the community, and try to support local businesses at the same time.”

It turns out Christina already started her random acts of kindness, delivering Lady Glaze doughnuts to the Police Department to thank them for their service to the community. She also thanked the Fire Department with Decadently Yours cupcakes.

Christina has also been making donations to organizations she supports, like the United Way of Guelph Wellington, the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Region and the Guelph Humane Society, where she adopted her beloved cat, Benny, a former ‘Mr. January’ in the GHS fundraising calendar. Benny has a kitty ‘sister’ companion, Lana, who will also enjoy being spoiled with some of the proceeds from her mom’s lottery win.

“I also chose to donate directly to The Foundation in December, rather than play the 50/50 Lottery, to make sure there is another winner. I know chances would be slim that I could win twice, but just in case. I want to spread the good fortune around.” Thank you, Christina, for being so community-minded and for your ongoing support of Guelph General Hospital.
