GGH stall member digital pathology

In 2024, Circle of Life members supported a powerful idea: helping Guelph General Hospital modernize how life‑changing diagnoses are made. Today, that generosity is positively impacting diagnosis and care for patients in our community.

In early 2026, Guelph General Hospital became one of the first hospitals in Canada to transition pathology slides from glass under a microscope to secure digital images viewed on screen. This change allows pathologists to review cases more efficiently, collaborate instantly with colleagues, and reach diagnoses sooner, especially for complex conditions like cancer. As Dr. Chris Ma, Chief of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at GGH, put it, “[this] is a huge step forward in the delivery of quality patient care at Guelph General Hospital”.

This new system is already helping clinicians get answers faster and with greater confidence. Instead of physically transporting fragile slides, cases can now be reviewed and shared digitally, reducing delays, freeing up vital space in the hospital, and helping care teams move forward more quickly with treatment decisions.

This project is also part of a broader effort to strengthen laboratory services at Guelph General, where testing volume continues to grow year over year. Digital pathology ensures the hospital can meet this demand while maintaining the highest standards of care.
